Map, 1861, of the area around Norfolk, Va. William Henry Sullivan sent it to his family in Mobile to show them where the 3rd Ala. Infantry Regiment was located. The map, dated 1861 June 6, was drawn by G.F. Lathrop. The map marks the positions of Confederate batteries, the 3rd Ala. Regiment's camp, the entrenchments dug north and south from camp, and Union ships in Hampton Roads. It also depicts landmarks in the vicinity, such as Fort Monroe, Fort Calhoun, Craney Island, Pig's Point, Lambert's Point, and the communities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Hampton. Rivers, creeks, bays, and inlets are also represented on the map.

The Third Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Montgomery in April, 1861. It was the first Alabama command that was sent to Virginia. Mustered into service at Lynchburg, 4 May, the regiment was ordered to Norfolk. There it was in a temporary brigade with the 1st and 12 VA, under Col. Jones M. William Henry Sullivan enlisted in the 3rd Ala. Infantry Regiment on 1861 Apr. 24 at Mobile, Ala. The regiment was immediately dispatched to Va. where it fought in the battles of Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Spottsylvania, and others. Sullivan died at Charlottesville, Va., on 1862 July 8, from wounds that he had received at the Battle of Seven Pines. From the description of Map of intrenched camp near Norfolk, Va., 1861.
